ArMarlon Barbour speaks to Philadelphia middle school students about overcoming life’s challenges through education and inner strength.
This program was born from the personal journey of ArMarlon Barbour—an author, speaker, and mentor who once faced the foster care and juvenile justice system himself. Now, he shares the very lessons that helped him find his path.
During a campus visit to West Chester University, ArMarlon stood before a group of Philadelphia middle schoolers and delivered a story that moved hearts and opened minds. His message, featured in the article “Philadelphia Students Get More Than a Campus Tour”, highlighted how his rewrite of The Tortoise and the Hare—now “Begin Your Race Being a Tortoise”—became a roadmap for changing his own life.
“He rejected the legacy of fear, shame, and blame… and used setbacks to create a better life for himself.”
Today, that story is a complete learning experience. With activities, video lessons, and creative reflection, students get to examine their own behaviors, set goals, and strengthen their inner shell—just like the Tortoise.
